What it does

CG 04 29 replaces exclusion f. so that several parts of the pollution exclusion do not apply to injury or damage from a "short-term pollution event", provided the insured notifies the insurer as soon as practicable and no more than 14 days after the event ends.

Who needs it

Contractors and businesses with occasional sudden release exposures (hydraulic fluid leaks, chemical spills on a job) that cannot justify a separate pollution policy.

Key provisions and limits

  • A short-term pollution event must begin during the policy period at an identified time and place, end entirely within 48 hours, not repeat a release from the same source within 12 months, not originate from an underground storage tank, and not be hostile fire smoke or fumes.
  • Waste-related and pollution-response operations exclusions and the cleanup-cost exclusion still apply.

Quoting and selling notes

  • The 14-day reporting requirement is strict; make sure clients know to report releases immediately.
  • CG 04 28 is the named-peril version of the same concept.
