What it does
Customers' cars in a shop's care are excluded from the shop's liability coverage (care, custody or control) and from its CGL. Garagekeepers coverage pays for damage to those autos. Since the Garage Coverage Form was withdrawn, non-dealer auto service businesses get garagekeepers by attaching CA 99 37 to the Business Auto Coverage Form; dealers on the Auto Dealers Coverage Form already have it through symbol 30. The Massachusetts residual market manual describes it as coverage for "loss to non-owned autos in the insured's possession while the insured is attending, servicing, repairing, parking or storing them."
ISO's 2026 multistate forms revision (CA-2026-OFR26) introduces a 09 27 edition of this form, approved for policies effective on or after September 1, 2027 in states where it has been adopted; the prior edition remains in use until then and in states that have not adopted the revision.
Who needs it
Repair and body shops, quick-lube and tire shops, service stations, valet and parking operations, car washes and detailers, and storage facilities for vehicles.
Key points
- Review the schedule's coverages, limits by location and deductibles against the value of customers' autos on hand.
- Towing operators moving customers' cars between locations need on-hook coverage (CA 04 52) for autos while in tow.
Quoting notes
Collect the maximum value of customers' autos at each location at any one time, security (fencing, lighting, key control) and whether vehicles are road-tested. Customers' sound equipment can be added with CA 99 59.
