What it does

Golf carts and low-speed vehicles are a gray area between auto and general liability coverage, especially when they are driven on public roads. CA 04 45, introduced with the 2010 revision (03 10 edition), lets the insured schedule these vehicles and buy, for each, Covered Autos Liability, Auto Medical Payments, Personal Injury Protection or equivalent no-fault, Uninsured Motorists and Underinsured Motorists coverages. The schedule lists the vehicles that are covered autos. It modifies the business auto and motor carrier forms.

Who needs it

Resorts and campgrounds, colleges and corporate campuses, retirement and gated communities, golf courses whose carts cross public roads, municipalities using utility vehicles, and businesses in towns that allow low-speed vehicles on streets.

Quoting notes

  • Ask where the vehicles operate (private property only, or public roads), who drives them (employees, guests, residents) and whether they are registered.
  • Carts used only on premises may be better left as mobile equipment under the CGL; compare definitions before deciding.
