What it does

Driving schools often instruct students in cars the school does not own. CA 20 06 provides only the coverages for which a premium is shown (Covered Autos Liability and Auto Medical Payments in the 10 13 schedule) and:

  • makes any auto the school does not own a covered auto while used for driver training; and
  • for those autos, limits Who Is An Insured to the named insured, any driving instructors, and any student driver while being instructed by the named insured or an instructor.

The schedule asks for the number of driving instructors and the number of owned autos used for driver training. The current edition is 11 20 (revised in ISO's 2020 multistate revision).

Who needs it

Commercial driving schools, high school driver education programs and CDL training providers whose instruction takes place in non-owned vehicles.

Quoting notes

Owned training cars are rated and covered as owned autos on the main policy. Ask about dual-control equipment, instructor licensing and whether students drive on public roads or closed courses.
